Abstract

-Abstract-
The author surveyed 1,329 Koreans through the oral examination and questionaires
method as well as measuring the malodor by use of Halimeter for volatile sulfur
compounds. Such informations for standardization about the average value of malodor by
Halimeter for Koreans by ages and gender group were examined.
1. The average value for malodor by Halimeter was 96.8¡¾99.1 ppb in men and 80.0¡¾
84.0 ppb in women and average 88.1¡¾91.9 ppb(p£¾0.05). The value was approved
increasing by age(p£¾0.05).
2.1.9¡¾1.1 toothbrushing frequency per day was revealed average toothbrushing time and
almost 71.0£¥ of total people answered that they had most severe bad breath at the time
of awakening. So oral hygiene control before going to bed and increased toothbrushing
frequency to reduce malodor was thought to be accentuated.
3. About the type of bad breath, mostly 31.6£¥ of the group think the type of bad
breath of their own as food smell and fetid smell was second most by dental plaque,
dental caries and periodonititis. General burning smell occured the time of hunger was
13.4£¥. Also unknown smell was appeared 29.9£¥, so there's some need to identify
etiology of malodor.
4. Tongue plaque was approved as the most important factor in making bad breath and
CPITN, food debris, lower denture, dental calculus and smoking was approved the origin
of malodor. So it is considered that removal of tongue plaque and tongue brushing have
to be done to reduce bad breath in case of intraoral origin or malodor patient.
5. In the answers of hoping for treadtment of oral malodor, 54.2£¥ of the people show
positive response to dental treatment for controlling their malodor. Especially 8.3£¥ of
examinees showed very big desire for treatment. So systemic and rationalized
management in preventing and treatment of oral malodor have to be developed.
